The Pirates traded former Gold Glove third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes to the Cincinnati Reds Wednesday in exchange for veteran reliever Taylor Rogers and a Single-A prospect. Hayes is likely to be a favorite to win another Gold Glove this season, but is batting just .236 and has the second-lowest slugging percentage in baseball.
Rogers has a 2.40 ERA over 40 appearances this season. He is in the final year of a three-year contract. The prospect the Pirates received is 20-year old infielder Sammy Stafura, who is playing in Single-A ball. He was the Reds 9th-rated prospect according to MLB Pipeline. He was a second-round draft pick in 2023.
The Pirates also sent left-handed reliever Caleb Ferguson back to the west coast in a trade with the Seattle Mariners for 19-year old pitching prospect Jeter Martinez, who was a Seattle top-15 prospect. Ferguson had signed a one-year free agent deal in the offseason with the Pirates.
The MLB trade deadline is today.
Taylor Rogers twin brother Tyler was also traded yesterday – from the Giants to Philadelphia. The Rogers brothers were two of five relievers traded in baseball Wednesday.
