The Pittsburgh Pirates earned their first victory of the season when trailing after eight innings last night, when they defeated the San Francisco Giants 5-4 at PNC Park. Catcher Joey Bart drove in Alexander Canario to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. Jack Suwinski, who had been hit by a pitch in the inning, scored the game-winning run on a groundout by Isaiah Kiner-Falefa. Suwinski, who entered the game barely hitting over .100 this season, hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning with the Bucs down 4-1.
Johan Oviedo made his first start in almost two years last night, but went just one inning. He allowed two hits and two runs. Oviedo, returning from Tommy John surgery, made 43 pitches walking three, including one with the bases loaded.
Four Pirate relievers covered the final eight innings, allowing two runs on five hits.
The Pirates have now won all five games this season against San Francisco.
The Pirates and Giants play again tonight at 6:40pm. WISR pre-game begins at 6:15pm.
