Two people died after an explosion yesterday at the Clairton Coke Works plant yesterday in Allegheny County.
There were also 10 other workers who were injured in the explosion, which happened just before 11 a.m.
Five workers have been treated and released, while the other five remain in critical but stable condition.
After the explosion, residents who live within a mile of the plant were asked to stay inside out of an abundance of caution.
An investigation is underway into what caused the explosion.
“Multiple explosions occurred today at U.S. Steel Clairton Coke Works in Clairton, PA. Since then, my Administration has been in constant contact with labor leaders and local officials, and I’ve spoken with [Allegheny County Executive] Sara Innamorato to reiterate that the Commonwealth is here to provide any resources needed. Injured employees have now been transported to local hospitals to receive care, and search-and-rescue efforts remain active at the plant. If you’re in the area, continue to follow the instructions of local authorities,” Governor Josh Shapiro said in a statement.
