After a challenge to his petition in court a former Butler City mayor has been removed from the ballot.
Tom Donaldson has been removed from November’s Mayoral ballot after a successful challenge by the candidate for the Republican Party Donald Shearer. Judge Kelley Streib ruled 15 of the 111 signatures on Donaldson’s nomination petition did not meet the necessary requirements.
There were multiple issues in the nominating petition for Donaldson. There were signatures from residents who didn’t live in the city of Butler, two signatures from one-person, illegible hand writing, and addresses that did not match voter registration cards.
100 valid signatures are required to place his name on the ballot as a third-party candidate.
Shortly after the ruling came down from the courts Shearer released a statement saying this ruling sends a clear statement.
“The challenge to Mr. Donaldson’s nomination papers was not about winning or losing an election—it was about the integrity of our elections as a whole.
Today’s ruling sends a clear message: the rules apply equally to everyone, no matter their past position or title. Fair and lawful elections are the foundation of our democracy, and every candidate has a responsibility to uphold that standard.
The people of Butler deserve candidates who respect the process, honor the truth, and earn their place on the ballot the right way.”
