Budget talks are continuing in Harrisburg after a non-partisan bill requiring more safety protections in work zones was rewritten to fund transit.
House Bill 257 would have provided stiffer penalties and more information on safe driving habits in work zones to new drivers. It passed through the house unanimously.
It was then rewritten in the senate by removing $400 million from transit capital projects to fund road maintenance, while providing just under $90 million in additional funding over two years.
The bill intended to provide additional protections to road workers then rewritten to fund daily transit while removing transit capital improvement project funds and placing the funding in capital roadway projects passed in the senate along party lines 27-22.
Although, the bill heads to state house committees for a vote, Democrats have announced they will kill the bill on arrival. Continuing budget negations.
