A new finding by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission found that the power grid in the state struggled amid a record number of power outages last year.
In 2024, Pennsylvania had 71 “reportable outage events” which was the highest number in 30 years. The PUC estimates that more than 2.8 million people lost electric at some point.
Officials attribute the increase to severe storms, vegetation-related damage, and an aging power grid.
The PUC also found that most of the state’s 11 electric distribution companies struggled to meet established reliability benchmarks.
