In the aftermath of a decision by the acting secretary of education to reinstate a previously fired principal at Slippery Rock School District, a local lawmaker is looking to change the process.
State Representative Aaron Bernstine will be introducing legislation that will give school boards more power in personnel decisions.
“Currently under Pennsylvania law, there’s an appeal process that allows the governor’s administration through the secretary of education to overrule a ruling made by a local school board as it deals with personnel matters. This would eliminate that process,” Bernstine said.
Bernstine says impacted employees could still appeal through their union or via lawsuit, but he believes school boards are best suited to make decisions like this.
“This isn’t a Republican or Democratic issue. This is a local control issue,” Bernstine said. “And so many times politicians in Harrisburg talk about Harrisburg not overstepping their bounds with local school boards; this is a great opportunity to solve that prolem.”
Bernstine says the bill has co-sponsors and believes it will have bipartisan support.
