Late last week a member of the Jehovah’s Witness faith who was found guilty of sexually assaulting a child with autism had a hearing in an attempt to get a new trial.
In January, 47-year-old Shaun Sheffer of Harmony was found guilty of rape and six related counts. Earlier this summer he was sentenced to 14 to 34 years in a state correctional facility.
This past Friday, Sheffer and his attorneys were back in court arguing for a new case or for the charges to be thrown out.
Attorney Al Lindsay argued that the law stature says that questions to Sheffer about his religion or witnesses should not have been asked during the trial, calling the any use of Sheffer’s religion as prejudicial.
Sheffer was one of 14 Jehovah Witnesses charged across the state in 2023.
