A new plan to clear roadways in Pennsylvania could soon be in the works thanks to a newly proposed bill.
If passed, H.B. 664, would direct PennDOT and the Department of Environmental Protection to create a plan to best manage the use of salt to treat roadways.
Officials say the proposal was made due to damage done by road salt down on roadways, vehicles, and freshwater streams.
According to the bills memo it takes “one teaspoon of salt to permanently contaminate five gallons of water, and salt is permanently changing the chemistry.”
During the 2021-2022 winter PennDOT used 12.6 million gallons of salt to clear the road.
The vote passed through the House Environmental and Natural resource Protection Committee along party lines.
