Pennsylvanians will could soon be able to repair their electronics and appliances by independent repair technicians, but not farm or medical equipment.
“Right to Repair” laws, as they are known, have been proposed across the United States of America. In 2023, a similar bill was proposed in Pennsylvania but never made it out of committee.
The bill would require original equipment manufacturers of electronics and appliances to make embedded software and parts available for consumers and independent repair shops.
This would make access for cellphones, washer and dryer, TVs, and more readily available.
The bill does note it would not apply to medical or agriculture equipment.
The bill passed by a vote of 110 to 93 but mostly along party lines.
