With freezing cold temperatures expected to continue Pennsylvania American waster is alerting consumers on how to protect their pluming.
According to Pennsylvania American Water Several Butler County consumers have already lost water service due to cold-weather related plumbing issues in their home.
The water provider has offered these tips to prevent water service being cut off due to plumbing problems.
Ways to prepare for cold weather include:
- Know how to shut off your water.
- Teste your main water shut-off valve by closing it and these testing sinks and other water fixtures.
- Eliminate sources of cold air near water lines such as pipes in crawl spaces, unheated rooms, basements, garages, and exterior walls.
Once the temperatures hit below zero you can:
- Open cabinets or vanities that have pipes running through so they can let warmer air flow in
- Keep water dripping
Finally, if the pipes freeze they say to:
- Shut off the water immediately
- Thaw a frozen pipe by getting warm air on it
- Once pipes are thawed slowly turn the water back on.
