A generous donation to the Butler Area School District from a Butler graduate in honor of his family and an impactful teacher will create opportunities for years to come.
Three new endowments totaling $4.5 million by Mei and Herald Chen were recently announced. Herald graduated from Butler in 1988.
The S. Andrew Chen Scholarship is funded with $2.5 million to help support the cost of a four-year college education. The Veronica L. Chen Scholarship is funded with $1.5 million to support Butler High School students taking classes at Butler County Community College. The Harding Whitacre Music Endowment is funded with $500,000 to help fund annual music department needs.
Herald’s parents, S. Andrew Chen, a Professor of Psychology at Slippery Rock University for over 30 years, and Veronica L. Chen, a lifelong learner who served as the Director of Library Services at Butler County Community College for over fifteen years, settled in Butler in the 1960s and raised three children, all graduates of Butler High School.
Harding “Corky” Whitacre’s lifelong dedication to education and music has continued following a thirty-five-year teaching career in the Butler schools that ended in 2001.
