Legislation is advancing put forward by a local lawmaker to protect the lives and reputations of those accused of crimes.
Representative Aaron Bernstine introduced House Bill 1585 prohibiting the commercial use of mugshots which passed the state House with unanimous support.
This legislation would prohibit the use of booking photos by websites that post them and require payment to remove them. It would amend Pennsylvania’s Crimes Code to create a new second-degree misdemeanor that prohibits publishing or disseminating booking photographs for commercial use with a penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of up to five thousand dollars.
More than 16 states including Ohio already have similar laws. The state Senate will now consider this bill.
