Negotiators representing the Mars Area School Board and the Mars Area Education Association continue to seek common ground on a new contract for teachers.
After a member of the board’s negotiating committee made certain aspects of the competing offers public in the interest of transparency earlier this month, the Mars Area Education Association has issued a statement about recent discussions.
According to union representatives, district representatives ended a Thursday afternoon session after about 90 minutes. They went on to point out that the average teacher salary at Mars is over 20% lower than some neighboring districts. Also, union reps say that Mars administrators have received substantially higher raises over the past five years than teachers.
The current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire at the end of this month.
