Governor Josh Shapiro has settled one of the multistate lawsuits challenging possible federal funding cuts.
The lawsuit filed by Pennsylvania and 25 other states along with the District of Columbia in May of 2025 attempted to block the Trump administration’s decision to cut AmeriCorps programs including over $6 million impacting 26 programs across the state.
Locally, this decision would have impacted the Family Service Corps of Butler Memorial Hospital which supports 90 veterans who are currently receiving peer assistance with mental illness and addiction problems. AmeriCorps also helps with disaster relief, tutoring for students, and maintenance of outdoor recreation areas like parks and trails.
The settlement agreement includes reinstating programs and releasing funds for last year and this year. As long as AmeriCorps complies with all commitments through January of 2027, the case will be voluntarily dismissed without prejudice.
