A group of local high-school students is undertaking a new challenge to learn about careers in healthcare while experiencing them firsthand.
As part of a signing ceremony with family members on Wednesday afternoon, 19 Butler Area Senior High School juniors are committing to the two-year MedEd program.
This pre-apprenticeship program represents a strategic partnership between BC3 which provides instruction in Medical Terminology and Introduction to Healthcare courses at the Senior High and Independence Health System who will provide hands-on experience and job shadowing in five departments at Butler Memorial Hospital.
This program is supported through a $400,000 grant from the Heinz Endowment to the Consortium for Public Education which is paying a Director of Pathways as a liaison for three years in order to help with rolling out this program and similar ones for other careers across Butler County.
Although some limited training with IHS has already taken place, official instruction at the hospital begins today.
