The Washington Capitals defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-3 last night. Both teams scored on their opening shots of the game. Bryan Rust scored in his season debut just over a minute into the game. Washington went on to score the next three goals.
Arturs Silovs stopped 22 of 27 shots. He also made an out-of-net gaffe in the second period attempting to retrieve a puck, leaving the net wide open for a Capitals score.
The Pens fell to 2-2. They visit Columbus Friday night and will have back-to-back games this weekend. They return home to host Dallas Saturday night.
Side Notes:
–For the second straight game, the Penguins were out-hit. This time 22-7. The Pens went 0-for-3 on power plays. Washington scored one power play on four tries. The Pens sloppy play also aided the Capitals. They had 21 turnovers compared to the Capitals 11.
–Captain Sidney Crosby’s early struggles continued. He was minus-four in the game, and is still seeking his first goal of the year. His linemate – Rickard Rakell was a minus-3 in the game.
The Pens made a trade Wednesday afternoon. They sent young winger Filip Hallander to Edmonton in exchange for defenseman Spencer Stastney. Hallander played in just the season-opener in Philadelphia this season. He had three points in the opener, but was a healthy scratch in the Pens’ other two games. The 26-year old Stastney had not played this season for the Oilers.
