Slippery Rock University defensive end Marcus Martin has been named a finalist for the Cliff Harris Award as the best small college defensive player in the nation. It is the fourth consecutive year he has been a finalist. The winner will be announced January 11th.
Martin was one of two football players from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference were among the top three finalists in the Harlon Hill Award voting announced last week. The Harlon Hill is the Division II equivalent to the Heisman Trophy for the best football player in the nation. Slippery Rock University defensive end Marcus Martin was third overall in the voting, which was the highest finish for a defensive player in the 32-year history of the award.
Gannon running back Marc Jones was the runner-up. Winner was Texas A&M/Commerce quarterback Luis Perez, whose team won the D2 national championship game last weekend.
A new “early signing period” for college football wrapped up Wednesday. The University of Pittsburgh football program received 16 verbal pledges, including Butler offensive lineman Jake Kradel. Penn State received 21 verbal commitments.
