Monday Night Football:
The Las Vegas Raiders opened their new stadium with a 34-24 victory over the New Orleans Saints. Derek Carr threw three touchdown passes for the Raiders, who improved to 2-0 this season. The Saints fell to 1-1.
Former Penn State running back Sayquon Barkley’s season is officially over after the New York Giants back tore his right ACL in Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears. Barkley was the 2018 NFL offensive player of the year. He will be replaced in the starting lineup by former Pitt running back Dion Lewis.
Barkley was just one of many injuries that occurred in this past weekend’s games. Denver quarterback Drew Lock will miss several weeks with a severely bruised throwing shoulder. Carolina running back Christian McCaffery suffered a high ankle sprain and will miss 4-6 weeks. San Francisco lost their quarterback, two running backs and two defensive players during their game with the New York Jets. The NFL is looking into a possible turf problem at Met Life Stadium.
Three NFL head coaches — the Denver Broncos’ Vic Fangio, the Seattle Seahawks’ Pete Carroll and the San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan — were fined $100,000 each for not wearing face masks on Sunday. Each coach’s team was also fined $250,000. The fines were imposed one week after the NFL warned teams about punishment if coaches didn’t wear face coverings on the sidelines at all times during games.
