The Commonwealths top enforcement office is reminding Pennsylvania’s to be aware of holiday scams this year.
Attorney General Michelle Henry is reminding residents of common scams that come around during the holiday season.
Common scams include:
- Email and Text phishing: fraudulent emails ore texts will come to your email or device claiming to be an order you didn’t place.
- Romance Scams: Where someone will build serious relationship then asks for money for plane tickets or legal documents.
- Online pet scams: Often sellers will charge large amounts for the “transportation” of the pet. It’s best to only deal with those selling pets in person.
- Online Marketplace deals: Often if a deal seems to good to be true it is in fact too good to be true.
Some tactics to avoid scams include:
- Set up alerts when purchases are made on cards.
- Go to a website for a customer service number or on the back of your card.
- Never pay with a prepaid gift card of any kind
- Never click on a link in an email, social media ad, or text message to make a purchase. Go directly to the store site or in person store.
If you believe you have been scammed file a police report and file a compliant with the attorney general’s office.
