With Valentine’s Day tomorrow, Pennsylvania’s top law enforcement official is warning residents about romance scams.
According to Dave Sunday, these scams were previously targeted at seniors but non-seniors are now nearly as likely to have this experience of a criminal adopting a fake online identity to gain the victim’s trust and affection then trying to manipulate or steal from victims.
Scammers frequently create fake profiles on dating apps, send engaging messages implying an existing relationship, and use Facebook to send a friend request that appears to be from someone already known. Many scammers will also seek personal or financial information or ask for compromising photos early in the conversation as well as ask for payments via cryptocurrency transactions, wire transfers, and gift cards.
Anyone who feels they may have been victimized by this or any other scam may submit a complaint to the Office of Attorney General’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.
