The name of AK Steel will be changing soon.
Officials with Cleveland Cliffs confirmed the news earlier this morning. A company spokeswoman said that “while Cleveland Cliffs appreciates and respects the legacy of AK Steel,” they will be retiring the name in the coming months.
The company says with the acquisition of AK Steel and another organization, that Cleveland Cliffs has undergone a significant transition.
With the move, all subsidiaries of Cleveland Cliffs will now use the parent company’s name.
The Butler steel plant was purchased by AK Steel in 1999, after previously being owned by Armco.
