Law enforcement is encouraging residents to be aware of online scams after arresting two individuals for separate frauds.
The attorney general’s office recently announced charges in two separate cases—a sweepstakes scam that cost a resident $130,000—and an anti-virus scam that took $15,000 from another resident.
Police say that scammers target older Pennsylvanians and they encourage family to talk with loved ones about possible scams.
“Scams against older Pennsylvanians are particularly devastating because many victims are living on fixed incomes and their life savings,” Attorney General Henry said. “These alleged scammers acted with deliberate intent to defraud their victims of significant amounts of money without consideration of the resulting financial distress. My office encourages friends and family to discuss potential risks with their loved ones.”
They also remind residents to never send money or gift cards to someone you don’t know. And if you’re suspicious of a solicitation, you should call police.
