The Butler Area Sewer Authority is supporting the application made by Pennsylvania American Water to the PA Public Utility Commission.
The Authority recently announced that it has joined with Butler City and Butler Township as formal participants in the final step of a process that could continue for another three to six months.
BASA will provide information to the PUC about how this transfer benefits residents. The PUC is expected to hold a public hearing at some point in the future to allow residents to participate in the process.
The agreement requires $75 million in improvements and upgrades to the BASA system within five years as well as keeping the current headquarters in place for at least the next ten years. All BASA employees will be retained at their current salaries.
PA American Water has agreed not to propose a rate increase for BASA customers until one year after closing or 2025. However BASA plans to increase rates by $2.50 at some point before the closing to address “immediate operational needs”.
