The Pittsburgh Pirates had a disappointing end to a 5-3 loss to Detroit Tuesday afternoon. Closer David Bednar blew his third save of the season by failing to hold a 3-1 Pirates lead in the ninth inning. This came after starting pitcher Martin Perez allowed just that one run over eight innings. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven.
Edward Olivares homered twice for the Bucs.
The Pirates are off today and open a seven-game road trip in Philadelphia tomorrow night. The Bucs are 9-3 to start their season.
