State lawmakers in Pennsylvania are looking to address what to do with pets when it comes to a divorce.
After passing along party lines, House Bill 97 aims to help determine what’s best for pets in a divorce.
The bill circulated by Representative Anita Kulik of Coraopolis, an attorney, argues that pets are often used as leverage in divorces. This bill will tell judges to consider several factors when deciding who will take ownership of a pet during divorce proceedings.
Judges are to consider:
- Whether the animal was acquired prior to or during the marriage.
- The basic daily needs of the animal.
- Who generally facilitates veterinary care and social interaction for the animal.
- Who generally ensures compliance with local and state regulations, such as licensing.
- Who provides the greater ability to financially support the animal.
The bill can now be voted on the house floor after passing through the house committees.
