Pennsylvania students will soon be required by state law to learn cursive writing.
A bill that would require the instruction of cursive handwriting or joined italics in appropriate grade levels has passed in the state house and senate.
According to the bill’s memo, cursive writing provides cognitive benefits, practical application to the real world, and supports developmental milestones.
The bill received bipartisan support in both chambers in Harrisburg and is expected to be signed into law by Governor Josh Shapiro.
It’s unclear if educational institutions will be required to start teaching cursive this year.
