A new bill heading to the state Senate would allow parents to decide if their child needs to repeat a grade due to lost learning.
The Senate Education Committee approved the bill earlier this week. Senator Scott Martin explains the premise of the new potential law.
“This is due to the fact after hearing concerns from many parents across this Commonwealth on how this pandemic has affected their child’s education in creating learning gaps over this past year learning at home,” Martin said. “Some students have struggled, so I think it makes sense to have parents decide a stronger say in whether their child should advance to the next level, or repeat a grade to make up for learning lost.”
Another provision in the bill would allow a 21-year-old special education student aging out of the system to stay another year to make up for lost learning.
