A bill that would ban the use of handheld cellphones by drivers is closer to becoming law following a vote earlier this week.
The divided state House passed the bill 124-77 and it now goes back to the state Senate.
The bill expands the state’s distracted driving law, which already prohibits texting while driving. Under the new law, the bill would effectively ban most activities using a cellphone while driving, including taking phone calls.
Lawmakers say that vehicles now incorporate wireless technology to allow people to take calls easier. Those voting against the bill cited that not everyone has that capability in their car.
The bill goes back to the Senate before it could move to Governor Shapiro’s desk.
