Lawmakers in Harrisburg have introduced a bill that will attempt to prevent landlords from using rent-setting software.
As landlords and property managers continue to use algorithmic rent-setting technology, lawmakers in Harrisburg are calling this practice price fixing.
Lawmakers say new data software artificially drive-up costs by recommending profit-maximizing rents thus leading to collusion between competitors.
The memo sent around also claims 80 percent of the market is controlled by the service RealPage, which in 2024 was sued by the United States Department of Justice for antitrust violations.
The bill would classify algorithmic rent-setting technology as an unfair trade practice. 18 States already have similar laws in place.
The bill currently has 18 co-sponsors, all of which are Democrats, and has been referred to the House Housing and Community Development Committee.
