Bishop David Zubik of the Diocese of Pittsburgh said he was shocked when he learned an American was named pope.
Zubik spoke to our news partners at WPXI and said he very surprised at the announcement.
“I was shocked because I believed that taboo that an American could never be elected as pope,” Zubik said.
Zubik also said he believes this shows the church is looking to continue the legacy of Pope Francis.
“It seems to me that the cardinals chose the surprise choice,” Zubik said. “To me there’s a clear indication they thought it was well to continue the legacy of Pope Francis.”
A Mass of Thanksgiving will be held at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Oakland this Monday at 7 p.m.
