Students at Broad Street Elementary are getting into the Christmas spirit thanks to the work of a security guard.
Jim Green works at Broad Street and went all out this year for the students. Green estimates that he strung up thousands of lights along with hundreds of decorations.
“It’s the greatest. I started putting things up about two weeks before Thanksgiving break,” Green said. “I had kids reminding me that it wasn’t Thanksgiving yet, and I told them I wanted it lit up for them when they can back from break. I don’t think they knew how much stuff we had.”
Green said it was worth all of the effort to see the reaction of the kids and parents.
“When they came back from break, it was all lit up. It was awesome. The kids were smiling and laughing. They were in awe,” Green said. “The first parent that came in started crying, and I just thought what a great thing.”
Green started the idea when he was working at Center Township Elementary as a school security guard in 2020. He then was transferred to Broad Street, where he says the school principal Vanessa Boyd encouraged him to have fun with the decorations.
“I start looking for decorations over the summer,” Green said. “It really is a lot of fun.”
Green said that he is also doing an Elf on the Shelf contest with the students that will finish before Christmas break.
