The Butler High School football program will not be participating in the WPIAL next year.
District administrators officially made the decision Thursday night. The football team is expected to play an independent schedule with organizing assistance from PIAA District 10.
Superintendent Dr. Brian White issued a letter to the community explaining the decision Friday afternoon. After spending time analyzing the situation and talking to many people, White has determined that the main issue is a culture of low expectations.
White is continuing to support head football coach Eric Christy even though the team has not won a game in his two year tenure. Instead White hopes to see improvement by sending the coaching staff to professional development clinics.
White also plans to establish a new position called coordinator of coaching which will facilitate collaboration between community youth football and the school football programs. Applications are also being accepted for the important position of Junior High Head Football Coach.
