The WPIAL Individual Track and Field championships were completed Thursday after rain and storms forced an extra day. Butler distance runner Drew Griffith became the first-ever to win the 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs in back-to-back years. Griffith captured the 3,200-meter run in a time of 8:41 to set a new WPIAL record Thursday after winning the 1,600 in another WPIAL record time Wednesday. He advances to the PIAA championships next weekend along with 32 other Butler Track and Field athletes. Butler will be sending five relay teams to the state meet and claimed seven individual WPIAL titles.
–One of the winning relay teams from Butler — the girls 4×100 relay team of Aubrey Rock, Lauren Bowden, Jocie Slesinski and Ari Morrow broke the school record with a run of 48.99 seconds.
–Also Thursday – Freeport’s Michael Braun was the runner-up in the Class 2A 3,200-meter run. Knoch’s Ava Santora took third in the Girls 3,200-meter run. Both also advance to the state championships.
