The Butler Area School Board has taken the first step towards becoming less restrictive about students and special interest groups distributing or posting materials.
At their regular meeting Monday night, the board approved the first reading of a revision to the policy that deals with student expression. This action has been taken as a result of a religious freedom of speech group challenging the legality of Butler’s previous policy.
One of the changes that will be made with the new policy is that instead of having to wait five days for approval to be able to post information, a student will only have to wait one day after notification and if the administrator does not respond, the student will be able to distribute the material.
The Board is expected to approve a second reading of their revised policy at their regular meeting next month at which time the policy will go into effect.
