Butler high school senior point guard Ethan Morton has been named the Class 6A state player of the year by the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Association. He is just the fourth player from either the WPIAL or Pittsburgh City League to receive the top honor. Morton averaged just shy of 23 points per game and nearly 13 rebounds per game in leading the Golden Tornado to the WPIAL 6A title and were in the state tournament quarterfinals when the season was canceled. He will be attending Purdue.
Morton was the only WPIAL player to be named to either the First or Second team.
New Pitt recruit William Jeffress of Erie McDowell was also named to the First Team.
Jeff Ackerman is leaving Pine-Richland as the boys head basketball coach to take over the program at Baldwin high school. Ackerman won a WPIAL and state championship with Moon high school and won two WPIAL titles at Pine-Richland.
