Penn Township officials recently approved a contract with Plate Smart Technologies for a plate reading camera at the intersection of Route 8 and Airport Road.
Officials with the township say the camera will be active at all times. Since there have been many accidents at the intersection, police will use the cameras to help identify what happened during crashes.
The cameras come as new traffic lights and signals are being installed at the intersection. The new light and camera have yet to be installed due to weather, but once weather clears they will both become active.
Funding for the light and camera comes from grants and the district attorney’s office.
Pennsylvania law does not allow for these cameras to be used for red light or speeding violations.
