The Kansas City Chiefs have repeated as Super Bowl champions following a 25-22 victory in overtime over the San Francisco 49ers last night in Las Vegas. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was named the game’s MVP for the third time in his career. Kansas City is the first team in the NFL in 19 years to win the Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons. They have now won three in the past five years.
After a scoreless first quarter, the 49ers took a 10-3 lead into halftime. The Chiefs scored 10 unanswered points in the third quarter to take a 13-10 lead. San Francisco scored the only touchdown of the fourth quarter before taking a 19-16 lead with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. The Chiefs tied the game with a field goal to force overtime. San Francisco kicked a field goal in the overtime, but the Chiefs scored a touchdown for the win.
Patrick Mahomes joins four other quarterbacks to win at least three Super Bowls: Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Troy Aikman and former Pittsburgh Steeler Terry Bradshaw.
Last night’s game set a record twice for the longest field goal in a Super Bowl. San Francisco’s Jake Moody kicked a 55-yard field goal for the opening score of the game. Kansas City’s Harrison Butker kicked a 57-yard field goal to open the scoring in the second half.
