The final College Football Playoff Rankings were released Sunday, and all post-season bowl games were announced.
–Clemson is the #1 team in the nation and will enter the College Football Playoff as the top-ranked team after defeating Miami 38-3 in the ACC championship game Saturday. Clemson will meet Alabama in the Sugar Bowl New Years Day.
–Oklahoma pounded TCU 41-17 Saturday in the Big 12 championship, and are #2. They get Georgia in the Rose Bowl New Years Day. The winner of these two games will play for the national championship January 8th.
–Georgia defeated Aubrun 28-7 in the SEC championship, and the win jumped them into the top four along with Alabama.
–Ohio State won the Big Ten championship with a 27-21 victory over previously undefeated Wisconsin. The Buckeyes will meet Southern Cal in the Cotton Bowl. Wisconsin gets Miami in the Orange Bowl.
–Penn State will meet Washington on the Fiesta Bowl on Saturday, December 30th. Game time will be 4pm.
Herm Edwards was named the new head coach at Arizona State Sunday.
IUP advanced to the Division II final four after defeating Assumption 27-22 Saturday to win the Super Region One championship. IUP will host West Florida in the national semifinals Saturday at noon.
Texas A&M-Commerce will meet Harding in the other semifinal. The winners move on to the national title game next weekend.
Four of the six high school football classes will featured WPIAL teams in the championship games this weekend.
–Pine-Richland will face St. Joseph’s Prep in the 6A championship at Hersheypark Stadium Saturday at 6pm. The Rams defeated Manheim Township Saturday 28-7 in the semifinals in Altoona. Pine-Richland quarterback Phil Jurkovec, a Notre Dame recruit, threw two touchdowns and rushed for another. He went 20-of-33 for 243 yards and rushed for another 85 yards, despite missing several days of school and practices this week because of illness. The Rams are 15-0 this season. St. Joseph’s enter the game 13-0.
–Gateway (14-1) will meet Archbishop Wood (11-2) Friday at 7pm in the 5A championship.
–Quaker Valley (13-1) will face Middletown (14-0) Saturday at noon in the 3A title game.
–Jeanette (14-1) will face Homer-Center (13-1) Thursday at 1pm.
All of the championship games are being played at Hersheypark Stadium.
–In the 4A championship, Erie Cathedral Prep (13-0) will meet Imhotep Charter (13-1) from Philadelphia Thursday at 7pm.
–Wilmington (14-0) and Southern Columbia (15-0) meet in the 2A championship Friday at 1pm.
