Two local municipalities are sharing with the public about plans that could result in a merger.
Officials from Adams Township and Mars Borough addressed a couple hundred members of the public at a meeting Thursday night saying that they would be “stronger together”.
As part of a commitment to transparency, officials stated that the idea of a merger began in November while discussing plans for a new library which Adams Township has over $5 million to fund.
Both municipalities unanimously approved resolutions and participated in a meeting with officials from the state Department of Community and Economic Development who could assist in the merger with grant money.
Local officials informed residents that if the merger is approved by voters of both communities this fall, the taxes of Mars Borough residents would be lowered to meet the current tax rate of Adams Township on January 1st of 2028.
Additionally, officials pledged that no municipal employee would lose their job as departments would be combined in the merger.
Finally, an informal verbal poll of attendees was overwhelmingly supportive of the name of Mars Township for the new municipality.
The next public meeting will be held on March 24th at 6 p.m. at a location to be determined. More information about this topic can be found on the merger page of the Adams Township website.
