The Department of Energy was at the Cleveland Cliffs Butler Works plant celebrating new regulations to build Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES).
In 2024, Cleveland Cliffs received $75 million in federal funding to upgrade their facility to help energy efficiency after a lawsuit by an environmental group threatened the closing of the plant.
On Tuesday, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright was in Butler to reaffirm the Trump Administration’s commitment to the manufacturing industry.
“The Trump Administration is unleashing the energy industry so we can reindustrialize the country. And to do that securely, we need to rapidly re-shore manufacturing of transformers in the U.S. The most critical ingredient in transformers is grain oriented electrical steel,” Wright said.
The reason for the change in regulation is the amount of heat amorphous materials can withstand. Furnaces need to get to temperatures as high as 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit but amorphous material can only handle temperatures just under 2200 degrees Fahrenheit. The new regulation will allow Cliffs to no longer use the amorphous materials.
Officials with Cleveland Cliffs also said these new regulations will still lower the plants carbon foot print.
