State officials are warning business owners about a scam circulating in Pennsylvania.
Jeffery Johnson is the secretary of the Department of Revenue and he says the scam involves businesses receiving threatening fraudulent letters.
“The letters have the Department of Revenue’s name and logo included on them. But, of course, they are not actually from the department,” Johnson said. “They’re asking Pennsylvania business owners to turn over their accounting records that could include sensitive information that scammers could use to take action that would be bad for their business.”
Johnson says the letters begin with “Dear Business Owner” which he says the Department of Revenue would never do.
He also adds that any formal letter from the department would also include a return address, which is not on this scamming letter.
