Dog owners should prepare for changes in dog laws starting in December and then major changes in the New Year.
Starting in December 1st, a new administrative fee for mailing licenses will increase by 20 cents. The larger change will then come in March with the increase in the price of dog licenses.
The cost will only go up a few dollars, but Butler County Treasurer Diane Marburger thinks the extra money will help improve the Dog Warden’s ability to do their job because of one simple reason.
“Enforcing is what gets people to license their pets. If they see the dog warden truck in their neighborhood, that spurs them on to get a dog license because they don’t want to be cited,” Marburger said.
Fines can reach up to $5,000 for misdemeanor offenses committed with unlicensed dogs.
