Multiple fire departments battled a blaze at an Evans City church Wednesday evening.
The call came into the Butler County 911 Center just before 7 p.m. for a fire at St. Mathias Church on East Main Street, Evans City.
Route 68 was shut down for some time while crews from Evans City, Connoquenessing, Penn Township, and Butler Township fought the flames. Firefighters were on the scene for more than two hours.
The cause of the fire unknown at this time, but according to our news partners at WPXI, the damage is extensive. St. Matthias has been inactive for about six months, but a mass was planned for this morning to celebrate the anniversary of the church.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Evans City Borough declared a disaster emergency earlier in the day on Wednesday as a result of recent storms and flooding.
