With many people spending more time than normal on social media during COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, the Pittsburgh Field Office of the FBI is cautioning residents about information being shared.
Several trending social media activities seem like fun ways to spend time but may result in participants accidentally revealing answers to common password security questions.
In sharing a high school photo to show support for seniors, some people are also sharing the year they graduated, the school they attended, and their school mascot. These could all be answers to password security questions which criminals could use to reset account passwords and gain access to protected data.
The FBI is advising social media users to carefully consider the negative impact of possibly sharing too much personal information online. Users should set security settings to appropriate levels and enable multi-factor authentication whenever possible.
