Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and a state organization is making an effort to raise awareness about veterans in crisis.
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs is encouraging everyone to light a candle at 8 p.m. in observance.
Military veterans are 1.5 times more likely to die by suicide than those who have not served and that number jumps to 2.2 times for female veterans.
Veterans who are in crisis are urged to call the toll-free Veterans Crisis Line at 1-800-273-TALK and press 1. All calls are confidential and this service is available 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
