Hunters are asked to be aware of a viral disease outbreak affecting deer in Butler County and surrounding areas.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission recently announced Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, or EHD, was recently detected in Muddy Creek Township as well as Lawrence and Mercer Counties. The outbreak is transmitted via infected midge bites.
EHD can be deadly to white tail deer with symptoms of swelling of the face or neck, loss of appetite, lethargy, weakness, lameness, respiratory distress, fever and excessive salivation. There is no treatment for these infections, but the Game Commission has been tracking EHD for years and impacted populations often rebound in a couple of years.
The Game Commission urges the public to report sick or dead deer to Game Commission officials by calling 1-833-PGC-WILD. This disease can spread to domestic livestock, and those situations should be reported to the PA Department of Agriculture.
