Even though we still have a couple more months of winter in store, local residents can think spring by planning to plant native trees and shrubs later this year.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission’s Howard Nursery is once again accepting orders for many different species of tree and shrub seedlings on their website, pgc.pa.gov.
The Centre County facility has a large inventory of white pine, Norway spruce, white cedar, red oak, sawtooth oak, black walnut, and crabapple. Planting native species of evergreens, shrubs, and fruit-and nut-bearing trees is a great way to provide food and cover for wildlife as well as watershed protection and soil erosion control.
Seedlings are sold in units of 25 and discounts are available for larger orders. The seedling order form contains plant descriptions, site preferences, and benefits of each species available.
