Governor Josh Shapiro says he is taking steps to limit access to a dangerous drug that is becoming more common in Pennsylvania.
It’s called “xylazine” but more commonly referred to as “tranq.” It’s a powerful sedative approved for veterinary use on large animals but one that is increasingly found in the state’s illegal drug supply.
“The drug slows down your breathing and heart rate. The combination of xylazine and opioids can stop your lungs and heart entirely. And opioid reversal drugs like naloxone don’t work on xylazine because it’s not an opioid.”
Shapiro’s administration has filed notice to temporarily classify tranq to the list of Schedule 3 drugs—meaning it would be elevated to a controlled substance.
