More residents of the Knoch School District spoke in opposition to a school board decision last month to join a lawsuit.
By a vote of 7 to 2 at the beginning of March, the Knoch Board decided to contribute $10,000 to join a lawsuit that argues the state’s two-year-old antidiscrimination protections for gay and transgender people are illegal because they go beyond the intent of the law.
Twelve members of the public at the meeting addressed the board to criticize the decision and ask the board to reconsider joining the suit. Board President Donna Eakin stated that the comments would be “taken under consideration” and discussion about this legal issue would continue in closed executive session.
Board members Rebecca Boyd and Jill McDonald voted against the decision last month and Wednesday night Boyd spoke in acknowledgment of the time the speakers took to contribute their opinions while McDonald said she echoed the sentiments expressed and was appalled by the suit.
By joining the suit, the district seeks to ban the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission from investigating complaints of discrimination involving sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression. Knoch is not seeking financial damages.
